Why should you consider Eye Treatment in India?

1. About Eye Surgery

Eye surgery is performed on the eye or its adnexa by an ophthalmologist. Eye is a fragile organ that requires extreme care before the surgery, during and after the surgical procedure. An expert eye surgeon is responsible to choose the appropriate surgical procedure for the patient while taking the safety precautions.

2. How is Eye Problems Diagnosed?

Optometrists and ophthalmologists are trained to recognize the various eye infections from the progress of the disease, the appearance on the surface of the eye, medical history and whether the disease is in one eye or both. There is a wide range of lighted devices that are used to look the cornea and retina.

3. Which Eye Surgery Right for You?

There are different conditions ranging from cosmetic changes to vision saving procedures that may call for the eye surgery. Each treatment has its own benefits, risks and indications for use. You should talk with your doctor for choosing the right eye surgery appropriate to tackle your conditions successfully.

1. Corrective Laser Eye Surgery: This is the most popular eye surgery in today’s times with nearly 2,000 people having it performed every day. Laser eye surgery helps to correct hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism, thus eliminates an individual’s dependency on corrective lenses. The two popular and common methods of corrective surgery are LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). LASIK uses precision laser to remove corneal tissue and reshape the cornea to change its level of focus while PRK is preferred for individuals with thin corneas in which flap may be more difficult. Both these surgeries may take approximately 15 minutes per eye.

2. Glaucoma Surgery: This surgery helps to reduce the intraocular pressure when the medication isn’t enough solution. This surgery can be performed multiple times with lower risk. There are two types of glaucoma surgery: Conventional and laser.

a) Conventional surgery: During this surgery, a new drainage canal is created to allow the flow of intraocular fluid out of the eye.

b) Laser surgery: During this surgery, a laser is used to make a small opening in the drainage system of the eye. This will help to increase the fluid drainage out of the eye. If this surgery fails to solve your condition or if your condition re-emerges, the ophthalmologist may opt for conventional surgery.

3. Cataract surgery: This surgery is used to remove the cataract which affects both eyes in adults over the age of 60. Usually, it is recommended for those individuals having vision loss which is hampering their daily lives. It is performed with minimal sedation and generally takes less than 30 minutes. During this surgery, an artificial lens is put in place of the original one to restore your vision.

There are three different approaches to perform cataract surgery:

a) Phacoemulsification: It requires only local anesthesia and the ultrasonic vibrations dissolves the cloudy lens via an inserted probe.

a) Intracapsular cataract surgery: It requires a larger incision, and the entire lens as well as capsule is removed. It is used only when the existing eye trauma makes the most practical option. Over time, the lens replacement may start to cloud and this is easily corrected with an additional laser treatment.

b) Extracapsular cataract surgery: This is often performed when the lens is too dense for Phacoemulsification. It requires sutures and the recovery period is longer. 4. Orbital surgery: This surgery is performed for treating enucleation, anopthlmia and evisceration. These surgeries are recommended for people suffering from large eye tumors, defects resulting in absent eyes or when eye can’t be preserved due to trauma.

The different surgical approaches to perform this surgery include introducing an orbital implant as the bioceramic or silicone orbital implants and the Orbital Tissue Expander. This helps preserve the natural structure of the eye orbit thereby support the placement of an artificial eye.

5. Lip Repair Surgery: The lid repair may be indicated for cosmetic as well as functional reasons. It is most commonly used for treating ptosis also called as droopy eyelids. This condition can obstruct your vision, cosmetically age the patient or create a visual incongruence between the eyelids.

Surgeries for ptosis include Fasanella-Servat and Miller’s muscle-conjunctival resection for mild to moderate ptosis, blepharoplasty for ptosis due to aging and frontalis suspension for severe congenital cases.

4. Which are preparations required for Eye Surgery?

The preparations required for eye surgery will vary from doctor to doctor as well as patient to patient. Also what you should expect before the surgery, during and after the surgery will depend on the type of surgery you’ll be required to go through so as to solve your eye problems. Therefore it is suggested to discuss your expectations with your doctor and prepare yourself for eye surgery.

5. Precautions after Eye Surgery:

1. Use eye shield for protection while sleeping.

2. Use dark glasses during the daytime.

3. Wash the eye shield and glasses with soap and water every day as well dry the same. Clean the operated eye as per the instructions given by the doctor. Avoid splashing water into the operated eye.

4. Avoid using cosmetics to the eye such as eye liners, mascara for at least 4 weeks.

5. You can resume activities like walking, talking immediately after the surgery. Avoid activities like swimming, jogging until 4-6 weeks after surgery. Avoid driving until your doctor gives you permission.
